CLAYTON DOUGLAS

TRAINER

Clayton Douglas was destined to be a success in the sport of thoroughbred racing.

His father Vic was a well-known trainer at Mornington, enjoying great success across the state in both flat and jumps races, winning the famous Grand Annual Steeplechase at Warrnambool three times.

Clayton’s uncles Ray and Rod also trained successfully, meaning the young Clayton has spent time in racing stables since he was old enough to walk.

Clayton posted 248 wins as a jockey before hanging up the saddle in his prime to take up training full-time. He won the Australian Steeplechase on Riding High at Sandown at his last race ride a matter of weeks after winning the Grand Annual Steeplechase for a second time on the great jumper Gold Medals.

Douglas made history when he rode High Mode to win the inaugural Jericho Cup at Warrnambool in 2018. He also won two Group 3 races on the flat, an Australian Hurdle and Brierly Steeplechase.

Douglas learned to ride under the tutelage of Pat and Michael Trotter before working with former top jumps trainer John Leek Jr before spending time working with the Anthony Freedman stable, where he rode the likes of Caulfield Guineas winner Super Seth early in his career.
