It was a big step for Clayton Douglas to back his judgement and pay $200,000 nzd for a gelded son of Shamexpress, but it looks to be one that may pay dividends.
At only his second start, Shambo won the Blue Fox Maiden Plate at Echuca on Thursday over 1100m. Not relishing the heavy 9, the 2yr old beat the older rivals after being sent out $1.75 favourite. Jamie Kah made the trek to Echuca for the one ride which no doubt gave the punters confidence and she gave Shambo the perfect steer in challenging conditions.
Shamexpress stands at Windsor Park Stud in Cambridge, NZ, and was a Group 1 winner of Australia’s premier sprint race in VRC Newmarket Handicap. He was the fastest son of champion sire O’REILLY and like O’Reilly, a Group 1 1200m winner as a 3YO against older horses.
Shambo’s dam is a winning RIP VAN WINKLE mare in Baubo, half-sister to multiple Group winning mare LADY KIPLING.
Shambo will now have a short spell in preparation for a Spring campaign.
