Giga Kick wins his first Group 1

His training career started with a dual license in August 2020 with Barocha the first runner & winner as a trainer. The final ride as a jockey was a win in the Ladbrokes Australian Steeplechase and focus turned solely to training in August 2021.  In October 2022 Clayton Douglas conquered the Everest with a flashy chestnut gelding fondly nicknamed “Conor”.

Some trainers wait decades for a group 1 horse, some never achieve it. But in less than 3 years as a trainer, Giga Kick has now given Clayton his first Group 1 winner when dominating the All Aged Stakes at Randwick.

Winning the Everest as technically still a 2yr old, this son of Scissor Kick has continued to thrive and mature and is taking everyone involved in the stable on the ride of their lives.  A brave second in the G1 TJ Smith saw Giga Kick in perfect order for his first assignment over 1400m and he didn’t disappoint anyone.

Craig Williams missed the ride in the TJ Smith after his horrific fall at Flemington weeks prior but he wasn’t going to let anyone warm the saddle any longer.  A perfect ride by Craig, settling back and letting Giga Kick “do his thing”, he rounded up a field of Group 1 horses in the straight to win by 1.66L ahead of Zaaki and Cascadian.

The achievement saw an emotional Clayton Douglas interviewed and to the amusement of the team at home “I can’t believe I cried on TV”.  Truth be told everyone involved with the win shed a tear! I

t was a proud day for the stable staff, loyal owners, and the Douglas family as uncle “Rocket” is also the Racing Manager for owner Jonathan Munz, and been an integral supporter of Clayton’s training career.  A big thanks must be given to Jonathan and Rocket for entrusting the team with what could be the next superstar in Australian Racing.

Giga Kicks 9 starts has seen 6 career wins and amassed an incredible 8.6 million in prizemoney.  His next target is the G1 Doomben 10000 over 1200m on 13th May.  His little mate Frankie has been travelling with him and they’ll both enjoy a short spell after the next start before being targeted for The Everest in October.
